The brown areas indicate contour lines and hills. Populated places and natural features are in black, other man made structures in red.

The grid is of latitude and longitude lines, at 30" intervals. The Virupaksha temple is at 76.4607,15.3343.

Below is a satellite photograph from Google Maps of the area, not to the same scale. Use the controls at the top left to re-position it if needed.

The photograph clearly shows the three main elements of the landscape; the hills (brown), the cultivated areas (green), and water (blue / black). The colonnaded streets of Hampi Bazaar, Sule Bazaar, and the car street leading from the east of the Vitthala temple can also be seen clearly. The dark geometric area at the base of the map is Kamalapura tank. The Turuttu channel and some other features, such as the palace areas also stand out, though not as clearly.

A scanned image (a jpg file of 600kb) is here. This was originally published in 'Hampi Ruins - described and illustrated', by A. H. Longhurst, published 1920, and is hence out of copyright.
